Citrix Licensing Schemes

There are 4 common licensing schemes that schools will meet:

Concurrent Connection Licence

As used by: XenApp, XenDesktop, NetScaler Gateway Universal licences

This is the traditional Citrix licensing model. Each connection takes up a licence, but the licences are not tied to individual machines or users. Therefore, licences that are not in use within school in the evenings are available for remote use. Similarly, if only 60% of your machines will be in use at any one time, you only need 60% of the licences.

There will be optional annual subscription advantage renewals (around 15% of the purchase cost) which will entitle you to software upgrades at no additional cost.

Per-device or per-user

As used by: XenDesktop (except VDI Edition)

Licences can be used either per-device or per-user. The licences are the same in both cases. Using a per-device model, you will need to have a licence for 100% of the machines that will use the services.

There will be optional annual subscription advantage renewals (around 15% of the purchase cost) which will entitle you to software upgrades at no additional cost.

Per-server

As used by: NetScaler, NetScaler Gateway

Similar to per-device above, but used when the item being licenced is the device as a whole and not individual connections.

Per-socket

As used by: XenServer

Each populated processor socket in a physical device requires a licence.

Campus licence

A fixed fee is paid per-user (both students and teachers) per year. There is no upfront purchase cost or additional ongoing subscription cost. You will be licensed for all relevant Citrix products (either Enterprise or Platinum). Minimum order value is 1000 users for the first year.

Licensing is verified by the school's Microsoft Schools Agreement, if they have one, or a print out from their MIS to confirm user numbers.

An accurate student number can be found at: http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk

The Campus Agreement does not take into consideration existing licenses or offer any trade-in. Citrix recommends that existing Subscription advantage are left to expire before taking out the Campus Agreement as unused subscription will not be credited.

XenDesktop Licensing detail

XenDesktop licences include:

  • XenApp (for application delivery)
  • VDI (for desktop delivery)
  • Provisioning Services (to provision physical hardware)

So you are covered to:

  • Provision a thin operating system and then use that to connect to a desktop from XenApp or VDI
  • Use published applications from within a virtual desktop
