Using a Ghost boot CD to save an image

  1. Shutdown server
  2. Insert Ghost HDD into right hand drive slot
  3. Switch on server
  4. Insert Ghost Boot CD. Once booted, you will need to navigate the menus with keypress (mouse will not work from a read-only medium (e.g. CD)
  5. Hit Return on “About Norton Ghost” page
  6. On menu, choose Local > Disk > To Image (where > means a sub-menu)
  7. Check source drive 1 is selected (which may have the smaller capacity) and press Alt-O
  8. On "File name to copy image to", press Alt-I to select the “Look In:” box and press Return to drop down the list of drives and choose "b: Local drive [Ghost]" or “2:1 [Ghost] NTFS Drive”. You should then see the contents of the Ghost HDD
  9. Use TAB and the cursor keys to select the sub-directory named after the relevant server (e.g. appserver02). Hit Return to enter this directory
  10. Press Alt-N to enter a filename and enter the date as the filename in the format: YYYY-MM-DD (e.g. 2007-11-07)
  11. If you want to enter a description (e.g. Office updated), press Alt-D and enter the description
  12. Press Alt-S to Save the file
  13. Choose Fast (Alt-F) when prompted for compression type
  14. Confirm you wish to proceed by pressing Alt-Y
  15. When the image has been created, eject the CD, switch the server off and remove the Ghost HDD

Using a Ghost boot CD to restore an image

  1. Shutdown server
  2. Insert Ghost HDD into right hand drive slot
  3. Switch on server
  4. Insert Ghost Boot CD. Once booted, you will need to navigate the menus with keypress (mouse will not work from a read-only medium (e.g. CD)
  5. Hit Return on “About Norton Ghost” page
  6. On menu, choose Local > Disk > From Image (where > means a sub-menu)
  7. On "File name to restore image from", press Alt-I to select the “Look In:” box and press Return to drop down the list of drives and choose "b: Local drive [Ghost]" or “2:1 [Ghost] NTFS Drive”. You should then see the contents of the Ghost HDD
  8. Use TAB and the cursor keys to select the sub-directory named after the relevant server (e.g. appserver02). Hit Return to enter this directory
  9. Use the cursor keys and Return to locate the image you wish to restore. The image file description will be displayed in the bottom panel of the display
  10. When you have found the image, press Alt-O to select Open
  11. On the "Select local destination drive by clicking on the drive number" screen, check local destination drive 1 is selected (which may have the smaller capacity) and press Alt-O
  12. On "Destination Drive Details" you can check the drive details (and if you wish restore to smaller part of the disk - useful if you want to repartion). Generally, just press Alt-O to confirm
  13. Confirm you wish to proceed with disk restore by pressing Alt-Y
  14. When the image has been created, eject the CD, switch the server off and remove the Ghost HDD
Notes are based on an IBM x336 (which has 2 drive bays). The drive slots may differ on your server.
